Harlem’s 125th Street Burns Twice in One Day

Two fires devastated a retail store and deli/nail salon on opposite ends of 125th Street on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. The Omega Gourmet Deli and an adjoining nail salon were hit with a stubborn fire around 5 AM on Tuesday and was brought under control around 9 AM, according to WABC (http://7online.com-Harlem fire guts row of businesses, displaces residents). Later in the day, at about 7:45 PM, shoppers leaving Marshalls, Staples and nearby stores walked into a smokey 125th Street caused by a fire in the Eden Furniture Store on the south side. New York Fire Department (NYFD) deployed four to six ladder engines to get into the structure from the roof. Traffic along the busy post-work rush hour was backed up in both directions  and there was no shortage of spectators using their recording devices to catch the event all along the street.

As these first responders stepped quickly into their tasks, it was not far from one’s thoughts that they had lost one of their own just days ago, and he was being honored this very night. While spectators raised cell phones, tablets or cameras to record the drama of firefighting, it should be remembered that these fires are much more than they will ever be on camera or video. It is hoped that many spared a prayer for the safety of all NY Bravest  on the job.
